This is a call out to my father who passed away, wow, well over 10+ years ago, but he hated seeing Oregon not doing its best to step up when it should. He showed me what the power companies should have done but didn't due to profits.

Imagine if every Oregon resident earning under $184,500 received enough solar panels to cover their household energy needs. Along with this, their homes would be upgraded with electric heating, air conditioning, and hot water systems powered by clean energy. This vision could transform not only individual energy bills but also the state's aging energy grid. What if we extended this idea to Oregon’s farmers and ranchers, offering grants and zero-interest loans to install wind turbines and solar panels on unused or unproductive land? Meanwhile, college students could design better hydropower and offshore wind technologies, with Oregon retaining a small share of patents to fund further innovation. This approach could create new local businesses that pay living wages and challenge corporations that resist change. Oregon could become a utility company for its people, building a safer, more reliable grid that prevents disasters like recent wildfires caused by outdated infrastructure.


Solar Power for Oregon Residents


Providing solar panels to all eligible residents would reduce monthly energy costs significantly. Solar energy systems can generate enough electricity to power homes year-round, especially when paired with efficient electric heating and cooling systems. This would:


  • Lower household energy bills by reducing reliance on fossil fuels.

  • Decrease carbon emissions, helping Oregon meet climate goals.

  • Reduce strain on the outdated energy grid by generating power locally.


Upgrading hot water heaters to electric models powered by solar energy further cuts energy use and emissions. This comprehensive home energy makeover would make clean energy accessible and affordable for thousands of Oregon families.


Supporting Farmers and Ranchers with Clean Energy


Oregon’s agricultural lands include many areas unsuitable for crops but perfect for renewable energy installations. Offering grants and 0% interest loans to farmers and ranchers to install wind turbines and solar panels on these lands would:


  • Provide additional income streams for rural communities.

  • Increase renewable energy production without competing with food production.

  • Help modernize rural infrastructure and create jobs in installation and maintenance.


For example, rocky or weed-covered fields could host small wind generators or solar arrays, turning underused land into productive energy sources. This approach supports local economies and advances Oregon’s clean energy goals.


Empowering Students to Innovate Hydropower and Offshore Wind


Oregon’s rivers and coastline offer untapped potential for hydropower and offshore wind energy. Engaging college students to design improved generators and turbines would:


  • Encourage fresh ideas and new technologies.

  • Give students ownership of their inventions through patents.

  • Allow Oregon to keep a 15% share of patents to fund further research and development.


Building these new technologies locally would create jobs and ensure companies pay living wages. Students could also design safer, more efficient energy grids that reduce wildfire risks and outages. This model supports education, innovation, and economic growth simultaneously.


Challenging Corporate Control and Building a Community-Focused Utility


Many energy corporations prioritize profits over community needs, slowing progress toward a sustainable future. Oregon could take a bold step by becoming the utility company for its residents. This would:


  • Allow the state to implement safer, modern grid technologies.

  • Prioritize community well-being and environmental health.

  • Encourage corporations to adapt or exit the market.


A publicly owned utility could invest in clean energy infrastructure, support local innovation, and ensure fair pricing. This shift would protect Oregon from disasters caused by outdated equipment and align energy production with public interest.


Benefits Beyond Energy Savings


This comprehensive plan offers more than just lower bills. It would:


  • Create thousands of new jobs in renewable energy installation, manufacturing, and maintenance.

  • Reduce Oregon’s carbon footprint and improve air quality.

  • Strengthen rural economies by diversifying income sources.

  • Foster a culture of innovation and sustainability among young people.

  • Build a more resilient and fire-safe energy grid.


By investing in people and communities, Oregon can lead the way in clean energy and climate action.

Taking control of the utility system ensures that progress benefits everyone, not just corporations.


This vision requires commitment from policymakers, communities, and individuals. It calls for bold action to modernize infrastructure, invest in innovation, and prioritize people over profits. Oregon can become a model for sustainable energy that supports families, farmers, and future generations.
